THINGS TO DO
Fabulous places to visit
There is an abundance of things to do in the area and some fabulous places to visit.
The village of Woolaston has a lovely country pub, The Rising Sun Woolaston Common is very popular, serving tasty pub grub, good local beers and a varied gin shelf! There is also a Ghurka restaurant at the Woolaston Inn and a well stocked village shop. There are supermarkets and other shops just a few minutes drive away in Lydney, the nearest town, and in the lovely welsh border town of Chepstow (the beautiful castle here is a must-see).
A twenty-minute drive will take you to the internationally famous viewing point at Symonds Yat Rock (pictured above), one of the best views in the UK. Take in the grandeur of Tintern Abbey on a drive along the beautiful Wye Valley en route to the Welsh market town of Monmouth.
For walkers, there are plenty of lovely walks, both long and short, directly from the cottage for those not wanting to use a car. The Gloucestershire Way and Offas Dyke are ten minutes away. The Sculpture Trail at Speech House is also nearby.
There is fantastic cycling in the Forest of Dean with miles of family cycle trails and more extreme trails for mountain biking. Cycle hire and more information is available from www.pedalabikeaway.co.uk and www.deanforestcycles.co.uk
Cycle-washing facilities and secure storage are available at the cottage.
For the fishing enthusiast, we are next-door to superb trout fishing lakes at Woolaston Court. Please visit www.woolastoncourt.co.uk for details.
For keen golfers there are seven courses in the Forest of Dean and eighteen across the Wye Valley and the Vale of Usk, including The Celtic Manor Resort, host to the 2010 Ryder Cup.
For the more adventurous the River Wye has been named in the top 10 wild swimming spots in the UK. There are several leisure centres close to hand as well as an open air pool in Lydney and the National Diving and Activity Centre is a short drive.
Messing about on the river!
For a fabulous, energetic day out hire a canoe or kayak and canoe the Wye canoethewye.co.uk. Take a picnic, there are plenty of places to ‘moor’ your canoe on the way and you will be provided with a barrel to keeps things dry!
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING
"No hesitation in recommending"
Dear Elaine & Gareth,
Having found the details of the cottage at Platts House in the Forest Of Dean Tourist Brochure, we looked at your website, checked availability direct by telephone and made the booking very easily.
We arrived on a cold snowy evening for a half-term weekend break to a warm, cosy welcoming cottage. We felt the welcome as soon as we entered the cottage especially so as we went into the kitchen and discovered a homemade loaf, homemade jam, locally produced butter, scones, milk, tea and coffee.
We had our 15 year old granddaughter with us, she slept on the bed settee in the lounge; we used the very comfortable bedroom upstairs. However, since Anne has some difficulty with stairs, after the first night we swapped with said granddaughter and we used the bed settee. This was certainly very comfortable for us and made a big difference not having to use the stairs.
The cottage is equipped with excellent kitchen and shower room facilities ideal for a short break or a longer holiday. This must be the cosiest self-catering cottage we have stayed in. Your welcome, together with your care and attention to detail made our short stay very comfortable and relaxing, and we will be very happy to stay at the cottage again.
This cottage is ideally placed for visiting the Forest of Dean area, with so much to see and do, it excellent value for money and well deserving of its 4 star status. We have no hesitation in recommending this to our friends and family. The name of the cottage at Platts House has no family connection, this is entirely coincidental !
Thank you, once again for our most enjoyable break.
We had a lovely stay here while we filmed the second series of Britain at Low Tide. Thank you for making everything so welcoming - the delicious Welsh cakes + pastries & letting Rosalind play with Toby!
Thank you Elaine & Gareth for our very happy comfortable stay in this lovely cottage. We return every year and we have a wonderful time. Thank you for the Welsh cakes and milk; most welcome after a long journey! The weather has been pretty good allowing us some great days out of walking.
Lovely and lovingly restored cottage in perfect location for day trips to the Cotswolds, Bath or The Forest of Dean. Excellent facilities with a lovely patio area for barbecue and all amenities nearby. Our friend from the States on her first visit to Europe was totally won over by the experience - not least of all the home baked bread still warm on our arrival. Elaine and Gareth are the perfect hosts and their knowledge of the area will help any visitor to use their time to the optimum. Highly recommended and will definitely go back - a real gem.
Dear Elaine & Gareth,
Just wanted to say thank you for a lovely week in your cottage. Such a lovely warm welcome and the welcome pack provided was such a thoughtful idea.
The cottage felt so homely and we really had such a relaxing time. Hope to see you again sometime.
Thanks once again,
Thank you so much for a perfect stay! The cottage was everything we wanted & made for a much needed break from the city. We'll be back again soon! xxx
P.s. We ate all the delicious Welsh cakes!
